#BeTheFirst Immigrant and Single Mother Blazes a Path to Independence

 

Kumarie Francis was born in Trinidad & Tobago, and moved to the United States fifteen years ago. As a single mother of four and an immigrant, she knows first-hand the challenges and barriers to raising a large family in public housing.

She has lived in Astoria Houses for 10 years, and has committed herself to ensuring her kids were engaged and involved in the community, and excelled in their studies. As a passionate and active mother, Kumarie has strived to be a role model for her children. After earning her GED, she began taking courses at Nyack College. She is active in the Astoria Houses community, attends WEEN events, and uses Urban Upbound services.  In early November, Kumarie began working for Urban Upbound Jobs Plus as a Community Ambassador. As an Ambassador, Kumarie tirelessly spends her time engaging with Astoria House residents, community groups and local businesses. While promoting the employment and financial services of Jobs Plus, she helps her fellow residents and families take advantage of the same services that made a positive impact in her life.

Kumarie and her family have shown the best of what can come through commitment and strong family support.
