Dion Moore

Dion Moore, father of two, was laid off from a trucking company after working there for over 13 years. He turned to Urban Upbound for help, where he received one-on-one job counseling and access to job training. Urban Upbound helped Dion retool his resume, participate in mock interview workshops, and receive training to obtain his Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Dion persistence and new skill landed him a job at Fresh Direct as a truck driver. He was also promoted from truck driver to crew leader, overseeing five other drivers. Dion also found a way to give back.

Dion runs the Urban Upbound Drills Build Skills Basketball Camp. The camp teaches children basketball and academic skills. 65 children, almost all from public housing developments in Western Queens, work with experienced volunteer coaches on dribbling, passing, shooting and all other aspects of the game. The children spend part of three Saturday sessions at the Long Island branch of the Queens Library, where they receive instruction on how to use the library, including how to find and check out books.
